Ben’s still-a good actor

Some are identifying this film with that of the infamous Forest Gump, starring Tom Hanks. However, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is quite the variant.

Let’s face it; you could never ‘remake’ Forest Gump. That, in itself, would surely be a fail to all things good and great about the filmic world. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty addresses nearly every cinematic genre with perfect execution and just the right balance; comedy, action, adventure, mystery, romance, substance. It may not be quite what you first expect if you have taken the time to view the official trailer, although key details are addressed in the extended six minute long trailer. But do not fear, they have still left true characteristics of suspense throughout, and the entire film and end result, is both surprising and inspiring. Without giving too much away, this film has elements of reality and credit where it is due, submersed with a dream world.

Stiller has not only brought a beautiful satirical humour to the role and film, but he has managed to direct it with ease and beauty. Stiller shines a new light of sincerity compared to his more outspoken roles in films such as Dodgeball and Zoolander. The film is complimented by a unique composition of music that glorifies the film when neccessary.

It is a hard film to put into a specific category of words, as it addresses the classic splendour of imagination that films are lacking in this modern age. It subtly addresses how people no longer take time to appreciate the true and hidden beauties of the world around us; that the so-called ‘reality’ we are living is just a collection of digital messages with not enough time spent truly being ‘in a moment’.

I was torn between a sense of elation and exasperation for the film’s consequence, but it is something you must watch and decide for yourself. A definite must-see in the cinema as the use of action and effects isn’t just comical but also exciting on the big screen!

A story of a day dreamer whose days become something you can only dream of.
